Second-hand solution for fashion in Moscow

It isn't a secret, shopping in Moscow is expensive. Yet, the streets are lousy with style! How can you keep up with the Ivanovs and keep your wardrobe trendy? The second-hand store Mega Hand has the answer.
With two locations in Moscow, one near Alexeyevskaya metro at 2 Ulitsa Pavla Korchagina and the other near Kozhukhovskaya metro at 32 Ulitsa Trofimova, Mega Hand is a bargain shopper's dream. The company advertises "clothing from Europe for the whole family," and replenishes their gently used brand-name stock with new shipments on Saturdays. If a pair of mint-condition Hilfiger Denim jeans for 1,000 rubles ($30) sounds like a good deal, hold on - it gets better.
In order to ensure complete product turnover and keep its inventory fresh, the store offers discounts that increase daily, giving patrons 10 to 90 percent off of their already nominal prices. The complete schedule of shipments and discounts can be found on the company's website, www.mega-hand.ru (unfortunately, only available in Russian), or in pocket-sized calendars available at either store.
Although both stores are spacious, the one located a short bus ride from Alexeyevskaya is considerably larger (1,000 square meters!), and thus provides more skirts and shirts to sift through on your hunt for the perfect outfit. To make things easier for customers, the merchandise is both neatly and logically organized on separate racks for men, women and children. When you do find that item your closet has been missing, multiple changing rooms conveniently ensure a proper fit.
Whether you are strapped for cash, a thrifty shopper, or just love a bargain, Mega Hand is the Moscow store for you. After all, any pair of jeans in this city that costs a mere 100 rubles is clearly something to see.

Derek Lam, Cliff Lede Vineyards Team Up on Wine

A VERY GOOD YEAR: Cliff Lede Vineyards has lined up Derek Lam to create a limited edition cabernet sauvignon. The designer himself blended the 2010 “Poetry by Derek Lam,” which will go for $210 a pop. The Napa Valley firm has only produced 47 cases, which will be available in October 2013 exclusively through Cliff Lede’s and Lam’s mailing lists, as well as Neiman Marcus - in time for the holiday gift-giving season.

After much tasting and discussion with the label’s winemaking team, Lam decided on a blend that is 76 percent cabernet sauvignon, 14 percent merlot, six percent petit verdot, three percent cabernet franc and one percent malbec. The designer’s vino is made from hillside fruit from Cliff Lede’s flagship Poetry Vineyard and aged for 24 months in French oak barrels. (The property also houses the Poetry Inn for wine connoisseurs who like to linger.)

Cliff Lede, who owns the vineyard that bears his name, said, “After getting to know Derek and learning that he is originally from the Bay Area and has a passion for food and wine, acollaboration marrying both design and fine wine seemed a natural fit.”

To dress up Poetry by Derek Lam, each bottle is wrapped with black tissue paper and a black grosgrain ribbon and finished with a black wax seal. Branded wooden wine crates have been customized for the project.

Front Row at Cerruti 1881

The “Gossip Girl” star plays a footballer in a double episode of “Silent Witness” for Britain’s BBC One channel. “We shot at Emirates Stadium, the home of Arsenal Football Club. We were filming during halftime in the middle of a real game, so that was pretty amazing,” he said.

Next fall, Becker will star alongside Clovis Cornillac in “La Brigade,” a six-part series for France 2 television, in which he plays a young man who leaves prison and goes to work in the restaurant of a prestigious Paris hotel.

Benn Northover, on the other hand, is taking a break from acting to focus on personal projects, including writing his first feature film script. A longtime collaborator of Jonas Mekas, Northover is curating an exhibition dedicated to the veteran experimental filmmaker opening Sept. 21 at the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Northover noted the location is especially poignant for the Lithuanian-born Mekas. "He left his home country for New York years ago in the Forties because of the Soviet repression, so the fact that we actually have a show happening inside Russia, inside Saint Petersburg, is quite spectacular," he said.

Upcycling turns scraps into fashion

“Upcycling” clothes, or making totally new outfits with novel designs out of scraps of fabric or discarded clothes, has become a trend among consumers who appreciate a new fashion twist that is also Earth-friendly.
Upcycling is the practice of taking waste or useless items and making them into new things that are better quality or have higher environmental value.
Fam is a Tokyo-based specialty shop that makes clothes and accessories out of overstocked clothes or leftover fabric from garment factories. On display at the shop are a shirt with a mixed polka dot-yacht design, and a patchwork bag made from scraps of scarves and denim products.
Founded in 2011, Fam has grown through online sales and as other stores began selling its products.
Fam’s designer Mariko Fujinaga became concerned about the large amount of unsold clothes that were just thrown away when she worked for a clothing maker.
“I thought I’d take another look at the status quo. I wanted to make a product that would be used in a more fashionable way,” she said.
Fujinaga visits garment factories and traders that collect scrap material in the Kanto region about once a month to find material for her products. Then she draws up designs and specifications explaining how to make clothes and fabric from the recycled products. Finally, she asks local garment factories or facilities that employ people with mental disabilities to make the product. She always informs the clothes makers that their materials will be reused to make clothes.
Fam sells shirts starting at about 15,000 yen and bags from about 4,000 yen. They have a good reputation for colorful designs and careful attention to detail. Fam is seeking to further broaden its market with an exhibition that ends in early July at the Isetan department store in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo.
Since 2010, Tokyo-based Rebirth Project has been collaborating with clothes makers to sell out-of-date Lee jeans and denim pants and jackets that were damaged during manufacturing. The twist is that Rebirth Project first puts an original design on the items.
The firm is represented by actor Yusuke Iseya.
Rebirth Project sells brand-name pants from about 10,000 yen made with fabric that has languished for a long time in warehouses.
“We in the manufacturing industry can’t stand to see products scrapped or thrown away. We’re glad we can create new value,” a Lee spokesperson said.
About 940,000 tons of clothing is discarded each year, according to a fiscal 2009 survey by the Organization for Small and Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, an independent administrative agency under the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry.
A movement has grown that seeks to connect these materials with remake brands.
Newsed Project, a Tokyo-based incorporated nonprofit organization, began five years ago purchasing in-stock fabric and other material from about 60 clothing stores and then passing them on to remake brands.
“Many companies don’t really want to throw out their products. I think they’ve entrusted us with their passion for manufacturing,” said Yuji Aoyama, the NPO’s vice chief.
Newsed Project also makes products under its own brand, such as book covers and pouches, which are sold in more than 90 stores.

Nigeria: Obaigbena Endows Academic Prizes in Fashion, Tech, Entrepreneurship

The Chairman of Leaders and Company Limited and Arise Networks, Mr. Nduka Obaigbena, has endowed $10,000 each, for three best graduating students of Bridge House College, Ikoyi, Lagos, in fashion design, technology and innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Obaigbena, who is the Editor-in Chief of THISDAY Newspaper, while speaking at this year's prize-giving day ceremony and lecture of the college, said the prizes would take effect next year.
He urged Nigerians to support education, because "without education, we cannot build the nation that we envisioned."
He said the three areas are currently underplayed in the country, hence the need to emphasise them and encourage youths to look towards those areas.
On the importance of fashion design, he said the economy of France and New York is driven by fashion, adding that Nigerian fashion designers are currently conquering the world.
"We will endow the Arise Magazine Prize for Fashion Design, $10,000 a year, and the winner will attend the New York Fashion Week. The second area is technology, the school will have to look at its curriculum and figure out how to promote technology and innovation. We will endow another prize for the best graduating student in technology and innovation.
"It will be called the THISDAY Prize for Technology and Innovation and that person will take one of the three slots at the Clinton Global Initiative University Summer School, offered us by former US President, Bill Clinton," he said.
He stressed the need to groom entrepreneurs to create jobs so as to address the problem of unemployment, which he described as the biggest issue facing the world today.
"We have to create jobs by encouraging entrepreneurship. We will endow another prize to encourage young people to be entrepreneurs and that will also be $10,000 and that person will take the second slot at the Clinton Global Initiative University Summer School in Texas from next year," Obaigbena said.
For the third slot, he said the college would decide and choose the beneficiary among the current graduands.
Earlier, Executive Director of the college, Mrs. Foluke Abdulrazaq, had said the college was established to be the firm academic bridge for students, who desire a comprehensive sixth form education, preparatory to securing admission into some of the best universities in the world.
"I am pleased to report that the current graduating class has excelled academically; from a total of 189 students, 158 or 84 per cent have secured provisional admission to top UK universities and 16 per cent are proceeding to universities in Canada, US, Hungary, Nigeria and Ghana," she stated.

A new film portraying the events of the historic 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting is set to begin filming in September. Written by Hollywood screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen, The Judgment of Paris is the second film to focus on the blind tasting in which a California Chardonnay trounced France. Unlike that first film, 2008’s Bottle Shock, Kamen’s screenplay will focus more heavily on Steven Spurrier, the wine merchant who organized the blind tasting, and Stag’s Leap winemaker Warren Winiarski, whose red wine took top honors during the event. The film is based on the accounts of George Taber, the only journalist invited to attend the Judgment. Kamen himself is no stranger to winemaking: he owns Kamen Estate Wines in Sonoma.
Jean-Guillame Prats, the new head of Moët Hennessy’s Estates & Wines division, unveiled the company’s timeline for its Indian and Chinese wine projects. Domaine Chandon in India is set to launch its inaugural 2012 vintage in Mumbai in October, while construction is underway near Nashik, Maharashtra on Moët Hennessy’s first Indian winery. The label’s Chinese operation is set to open a new winery in the Ningxia Province, close to the Mongolian border, while 2013 marks the first harvest for Domaine Chandon’s red wine. Domaine Chandon also produced a 2012 sparkling wine as part of its Chinese plans, though it won’t appear on the market until 2014.

Interview with Designer Chan Luu

Known best for her jewelry line, designer Chan Luu innately marries natural elements like custom dyed leathers with sterling silver and gold vermeil to create handmade organic and tactile accessories, which have made her a trend leader with an A-List following.
blue bracelet
Possibly the most recognizable piece in her collections is the wrap bracelet, woven with hand-cut semi-precious stones. But, don’t overlook her incredibly lightweight and luxe cashmere and silk scarves, apparel and men’s jewelry.
scarf
She’s a chic, contemporary artist for the modern girl.  Recently I caught up with the designer herself for a quick and fun Q&A. And, by the way, you can find Chan Luu’s line locally at Lotus Boutique on Main Street in downtown Sarasota.
tassle necklace
When it comes to the Chan Luu brand, what are you most proud of?
That we always stay true to our core belief, and that our products are totally handmade with love and care by poor yet skilled artisans.
Is there a culture that you’re particularly inspired by?
All cultures are inspiring to me because our products are created for today’s fashion, and are very related to art and history. It’s about the relationship of old and new; what’s art to us today without a history behind it?
How did the signature Chan Luu style evolve?
I travel extensively for inspiration. With every trip I make, my collection will tell a story, therefore evolving naturally through my vision and my interaction with diverse cultures.
What are your favorite materials to work with?
All organic materials. We also love to manipulate recycled material into modern products, like [the ones] from our new collection, Chan Luu e.f.i. (ethical fashion international).
Where do you shop for inspiration?
A lot through travelling, craft markets, fruit and spices markets, flea markets, museums, architecture, art fairs…but I find that people going about their everyday life in each country are very inspiring–how they adorn themselves according to their religion, art history or climate.
LAYER
What tips do you have for those who are intimidated by layering jewelry?
Wearing jewelry is  an expression of self love, so everyone is different. I never want to dictate how someone should wear my jewelry; you should adorn yourself  according to how you feel at the moment. Also, experimenting how to layer is fun. I encourage everyone to try and create their own look. A suggestion would be to not be shy; layering is a creative and fun exercise, and at the end of the day, you own the authority to show it off!
EFI COLLECTION
Above: Bracelets from Chan Luu’s e.f.i Kenya collection.
What would you like to conquer next?
I am very involved in a collaboration in Africa and Haiti with The United Nation Ethical Fashion Initiative agency. I believe in empowering poor women artisans from around the world and I believe in helping poor artisans getting out of poverty with dignity by training them to have the skills to create a sustainable life for themselves. Poverty creates violence and most of the time this violence is against women and innocent children.
Also, I’m a breast cancer activist and I create new collection every year to raise money for breastcancer.org‘s  ”Think Pink, Live Green” initiative so that together we can educate people on how to prevent breast cancer through making smart lifestyle choices. This cause is very important to me because the development of breast cancer is only 30 percent genetic; the rest is the choices we make in the way that we live our lives.

wrap bracelet
And for fun…
What’s your latest obsession?
Currently I am into urban organic farming…am crazy about it, it gives me so much joy spending time on the weekend playing around in my garden. Every day I start my dinner with a fresh green salad with lettuce, tomatoes, and green beans grown from my garden. To me, that’s pure luxury.
Any new digital discoveries?
This is my weakness. I still have a hard time blogging every day….luckily, all my young assistants are trying to update me with the latest discoveries. There is only so much time in a day, and sitting in front of the computer for hours certainly is not on the top of my list.
Who’s your artist crush of the moment?
Stella McCartney. I have a lot of admiration for Stella. She brings awareness to the fashion world on how we should wear fashion responsibly, say no to cheap labor exploitation, have respect for the earth by going green, and stop killing animals. Great role model if anybody is looking for one!

Fashion Faux Pas: Five most unforgivable looks

KARACHI:
Have you ever felt that you are being stared at excessively? Do you hear the two gossipmongers playing Chinese Whispers right behind the desk at your workplace? Are you somehow the butt of all jokes, thanks to your fashion sense that you feel expresses your individuality?
It’s time to face the reality — being different doesn’t always mean you are fashion forward. Despite several attempts by fashion editors, our streets seemed to be filled with fashion disasters; from aunties who have taken the Forever Young concept a bit too seriously to the self-proclaimed metrosexual males who seem rather confused about whether the word fashion was ever invented for the XYs.
Here are the top five fashion faux pas avatars or rather the most common types of fashion victims that are seen trotting down the streets:
Bag of skittles — a little too much colour?
A wrinkled, neon-coloured shalwar kameez with bright pink flower prints, a tomato-red patent bag and a pair of crisp white wedges — yes, people have been seen wearing this in broad daylight!
Too much colour draws attention, but not the kind that will get you praise. If you are one of those, please stop because people around you are on the verge of turning colour blind. Maintain your outfit to a maximum of two colours and try to balance it out with nudes.
Remember the KISS formula — keep it simple, stupid!
America’s Next Top Model devotee
Everyone cannot pull off everything. This is a fact. And it’s better to accept it before finding ourselves in embarrassing situations. What probably looked good on Tyra Banks or Nadia Hussain is not necessarily going to look good on someone with a plump or rounder figure.
So let’s not rely too heavily on mainstream fashion magazine covers, or becoming a fashion victim will be inevitable. Printed pants, headbands and babydoll dresses will probably only make us appear hormonally challenged.
Trends are there to inspire us, not dictate what we must wear. So, it’s always better to wear clothing that suits your body type and makes you look sophisticated.
Thirty going on 13?
Have you ever come across aunties who respond to your “Salaam” with an oh-so-cool “Hi!”? They are normally spotted at places like Dolmen City Mall with the ‘I’m way too cool and young to be a mom’ look and the ‘perfect’ swagger.
It seems like more and more women are forgetting the importance of age-appropriate dressing. We understand that the temperatures are soaring and the scorching heat is maybe a factor in how people dress, but a graphic tee paired with cropped pants and strappy granny sandals is probably only suitable for a day at the gym.
Moderate enlightenment has made us more open to a universal fashion sense but, as bitter as reality may seem, some clothes are only suited for those who are blossoming.
The Bappi Lehri sidekick
An honest piece of advice for all the men out there — women hate men with jewelry!
So, in case you think that the silver stud on your ear or those rapper medallions over your t-shirt make you look oh-so-hot, please think again.
The only bling that a man should be wearing is a good branded watch and perhaps a wedding ring.
Unless you are a rock star, a good looking Italian, or Bappi Lehri himself, overdone jewelry looks downright ridiculous!
Santa’s sock lover
A shout out to all the desi uncles and young boys who are always feeling cold — please get rid of those socks, it’s a 100 degrees outside!
Socks and sandals have nothing to do with each other and more so, in this sweltering heat! Let your feet breathe, as that is what sandals were made for in the first place.
In case you are too fond of the warmth of socks, try out moccasins or a pair of sneakers, or just move to a location with cooler climate.
Better yet, hang them in your homes and wait for Santa Claus to fill them up with goodies!

The Primer 6/28/2013: Drama at Men's Wearhouse, Dolce & Gabbana's Streaker Revealed & More

Welcome to The Primer, an ongoing series where we give you the rundown on the top stories of the week that was.
  • Recently fired Men’s Wearhouse executive George Zimmer shot back at his former employer this week with an open letter claiming he was ousted for suggesting the company go private. (WWD)
  • So, as we can see, it seems George Zimmer can't find any humor in his situation. But that's OK, because Kenny G. and Dave Mustaine from Megadeath have, in a new spoof video. (Funny or Die)
  • Although the Dolce & Gabbana streaker might be old news to you at this point, we know that some of you have had a burning desire to know more about the, um, ballsy show-goer: who he is, how he crashed the Italian duo's SS14 show, and what he was... wearing. Lucky for you, The Cut has the scoop and the fashion credits. (The Cut)
  • Alfred Dunhill makes us all feel like inadequate pansies once more with the latest installation in their “Portraits of Achievement” video series. This time, Olympic sailor Iain Percy does such manly things as staring off into the distance and dramatically steering a ship. (Alfred Dunhill)
  • In case the sticky days of summer have you craving some non-breathable, heavy loungewear, Barney’s is now stocking a pair of python sweatpants from En Noir. Start saving: They’ll set you back a cool $7,300. (Complex)
  • Gant will open its largest US flagship next month, in Chicago’s up-and-coming Bucktown area. The 2,000-square-foot store will feature the Gant Rugger and Gant by Michael Bastian collections, as well. (Chicago Now)

Five-Year-Old Alonso Mateo is Instagram's Newest Fashion Sensation

Monterrey-born, Laguna Beach-raised Alonso Matea has become an Instagram sensation. The mini-fashionista has over 5,000 followers.
Everything started when his mother, Luisa Fernanda Espinosa, a freelance fashion stylist, began posting his pictures on her own Instagram account, which quickly collected around 127,000.Alonso's own account is expected to reach that number of followers, if not more.
Like Us on Facebook
Driven by her interest in creating new styles, Luisa started to dress Alonso Mateo up, and now she has passed on of her passion to her son. The boy gets his style from both his parents: his mother has contributed to Harper's Bazaar México and Latin America, and his father, José Agustín Valdés, is the owner and CEO of a private equity firm who always wears nice suits. They shop together as a family.
"I would put a scarf or a beanie on him and he wouldn't mind. After a while, when he was 3 almost 4, he started asking me for bow ties and suits!", Luisa told KNSTRCT.
Little Alonso Mateo developed a bow tie obsession after he saw FUN's "We Are Young" video and loved singer Nate Ruess' outfit. He also loves combat boots and sunglasses, his mother said. "He likes Little Marc Jacobs, Crewcuts, American Apparel, Dior, Kitson Kids and All Saints, but they recently closed the children's department. Nordstrom and Bloomingdales are the departments stores where I find good brands for him, too, like Peek and Diesel", revealed Luisa.
She also likes to bring Alonso Mateo to Gucci, Stella McCartney, Bon Point, H&M, Dolce & Gabanna and Target. "As long as it's nice quality, I'll take it", she said.
Alonso Mateo and his mother Luisa.
Alonso Mateo and his mother Luisa.
In an interview with joylovefashion.com, the proud mother confessed the two pick his outfit together. "We pick outfits together. He asks in the mornings for a specific thing. This can vary from a bow tie, jeans, loafers, certain sneakers, a suit, etc." The little fashionista has also given detail on his personal choices. "I love suits, sneakers and sunglasses. I like to dress like my dad, because he has cool suits", he told The Cut.
Many have criticized Luisa for posting her little son's pictures for everyone to see, backlashing at her parenting skills and calling Alonso "spoiled" and "materialistic". But she doesn't mind: "When we go shopping, if he wants loafers just like his daddy and I can afford them, I get them. We're fine raising our son. He's always polite, he's grounded, and he's a sweet boy."
"I don't think he really notices he's fashion forward. He's too young", she added.

The Final Emancipation of Native Fashion Arrives as Young Native™

anadian native designer, Angela DeMontigny is announcing the launch of her newly formed co.YOUNG NATIVE FASHION INC., and her new website www.youngnativefashion.com. Her newest and most exciting collection to date will be released and available for purchase online beginning Thurs., June 27, 2013.
The launch was set to coincide within the week of DeMontigny’s one year anniversary of the opening of her Fashion Design Studio/Gallery/Showroom in Ancaster, Ontario last year.
‘Live Free, Love Free’, is the motto of Young Native Fashion. A new line and concept developed when Angela DeMontigny
started working with Chinese cross-over star, Ayi Jihu as her personal designer and stylist. Ayi Jihu was so taken with Angela’s work that she asked her to redesign the costume for her upcoming feature film ‘Fear Chaser’.
This led to a friendship and working relationship that inspired DeMontigny to create a new line of fashion and accessories with Ayi as her muse. When asked why she took this direction she replied ‘I have always been a proponent and supporter of racial diversity and have made a point over the years to use models from as many ethnicities as possible in my runway shows.
Working with Ayi gave me a much larger opportunity to incorporate this racial diversity into my fashion designs and by having her as my Brand Ambassador’.
Ayi JIhu models the latest collection along with a number of beautiful and talented Canadian models. Ever the trend setter, DeMontigny made a strong statement about racial diversity when casting the models for the Young Native photo shoot. The new collection boldly illustrates Angela DeMontigny’s signature, edgy style of integrating both traditio
nal native and contemporary elements into her designs, and presents 4 distinct groups within the collection which have their own distinct
Colour Bloc: Beautiful, bold colours in luxurious yet casual goat suede and lambskin separates which will work perfectly at the office or the weekend; Purple & Gold: A softer, yet rich colour palette of gold, copper, leather with accents of white and magenta goat suede and a stunning shearling coat with a fur trimmed hood. Black N Bronze: a strong, sexy group of glamorous evening pieces ranging from a long skirt with thigh high fringe to a daring tuxedo pant suit with slashed details.
