Derek Lam, Cliff Lede Vineyards Team Up on Wine

A VERY GOOD YEAR: Cliff Lede Vineyards has lined up Derek Lam to create a limited edition cabernet sauvignon. The designer himself blended the 2010 “Poetry by Derek Lam,” which will go for $210 a pop. The Napa Valley firm has only produced 47 cases, which will be available in October 2013 exclusively through Cliff Lede’s and Lam’s mailing lists, as well as Neiman Marcus - in time for the holiday gift-giving season.

After much tasting and discussion with the label’s winemaking team, Lam decided on a blend that is 76 percent cabernet sauvignon, 14 percent merlot, six percent petit verdot, three percent cabernet franc and one percent malbec. The designer’s vino is made from hillside fruit from Cliff Lede’s flagship Poetry Vineyard and aged for 24 months in French oak barrels. (The property also houses the Poetry Inn for wine connoisseurs who like to linger.)

Cliff Lede, who owns the vineyard that bears his name, said, “After getting to know Derek and learning that he is originally from the Bay Area and has a passion for food and wine, acollaboration marrying both design and fine wine seemed a natural fit.”

To dress up Poetry by Derek Lam, each bottle is wrapped with black tissue paper and a black grosgrain ribbon and finished with a black wax seal. Branded wooden wine crates have been customized for the project.
