Fashion's obsession with Elsa Schiaparelli continues, with Christian Lacroix announcing he's designed a tribute collection that will pay homage to the Italian designer. Lacroix's exhibition (the clothes won't be sold in stores) follows last year's Met Gala, which celebrated "Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations."
Marc Jacobs has said she inspires his work and here at Glamour, we're obviously huge fans of Schiaparelli and her love of all things pink (which you can tell from looking at our website!) But she's meant much more to fashion than making us pretty in pink.
She explored a different kind of femininity and the results weren't always so traditionally attractive. She challenged women to mix patterns and colors in a different way, for example. She was famous for her collaboration with the surrealist painter Salvador Dali. Together, they created this compact in the shape of arotary telephone dial. She was also one of Coco Chanel's biggest rivals!
Since I'm probably not going to make it to Paris to see Lacroix's exhibition, let's turn back the clock for a moment and revisit some of the reasons she's still such an inspiration!
This iconic lobster dress was part of the collaboration between the designer and Dali. It was worn by the Duchess of Windsor. It has also been copied by more designers than I can count.
Schiaparelli pink! This dress, circa 1937, appeared in Vogue last year on the eve of the Met Gala. If you love this shade of pink, you have Schiaparelli to thank.
Who doesn't love a Schiaparelli topper! No look back at her fashion legacy would be complete without showing off a few of her fun hats.
Did you catch the Met exhibition last year? Have you ever worn Schiaparelli pink?
